The Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) is the European Technology Platform for Aeronautics and Air Transport (AAT) that provides guidance for the future of the European aeronautics research. ACARE previous roadmap, the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), was highly of inspiration for EC work programme elaboration on Aeronautics and Aviation. In this frame, in 2011, the European Commission published the “FlightPath2050”, Europe’s Vision for Aviation, a Report of the High Level Group on Aviation Research, regarding the AAT challenges and a new Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) was released in September 2012. Over the five calls launched since 2007, numerous projects were funded by the EC on cost-efficiency topic, accordingly with objectives targeted in ACARE SRA1&2.

The Coordination and Support Action, CAPPADOCIA (Coordination Action Pro Production, Avionics, Design on Cost-efficiency in Aeronautics) responds to the 6th call, and in this context, it focuses on research activities that address solely or mainly the SRIA goal of cost efficiency in Aeronautics and Air Transport and in particular the following technical domains:

  • Airframe Design Systems and Tools
  • Production and Maintenance
  • Avionics and other relevant domains dealing with cost efficiency such as propulsion

Precisely, CAPPADOCIA will first carry out a review of the European state of the art of research and innovation, including capacity and main performers, in relation with cost efficiency in the field of Aeronautics and Air Transport. The analysis of the state of the art will be mostly done on European projects but partners will also be invited to describe other main non-European projects that cover the targeted fields of the cost reduction. Then, the CAPPADOCIA partners will identify scientific and technological gaps as well as bottlenecks to innovation and formulate strategic recommendations with the ambition to support the European Commission for orientation of future Work Programmes, i.e. Horizon 2020.
